Back at Wrestlemania 31, Triple H and Sting squared off in Sting’s very first match with WWE. The match has come under critsisum for the way Sting was portrayed in the lead up and the outcome. In the lead up Sting was shown as a WCW star that wasn’t good enough and wasn’t in the same league as his fellow WWE superstars.
The match in the sunshine of San Francisco. Triple H pinned Sting in what many fans believe was a burial of Sting. But in the episode of Untold looking back at the match, Triple H spoke about facing The Rock at Wrestlemania 32 and the need for him to look strong for later in the evening when they would meet for their confrontation. Triple H said on the programme;
“Part of the impetus with the way things turned out with the Sting thing is because I was already booked to work with The Rock at the following year’s WrestleMania and we’ll build it for more than a year. That was the intent, belief, everything else. Just as time went on, Rock’s schedule changed later in the year and we weren’t able to do the match for the following year’s WrestleMania one-on-one against The Rock.”
Triple H continued
“You know there are people who’ll say, ‘Well…’, I should’ve put him over to give him the moment and that’s arguably — to say that you should’ve… The Rock situation made that impossible, which didn’t happen, but that’s the truth of it. Are there things that could’ve been done differently? I don’t know that it took away from anything.”
When looking back, The Rock actually had a small confrontation with Triple H at the Royal Rumble 2015, before Wrestlemania 31. The closing moments of the show saw The Rock celebrate with Roman Reigns who had just won the rumble match, much to the crowds disapproval. Triple H appeared on the stage along with Stephanie McMahon and disapproved of Reigns winning along with The Rock in the ring. Triple H would point and mouth some words at Reigns and The Rock before leaving.
With Triple H pinning Sting, Triple H and Stephanie came out later in the evening at Wrestlemania 31 to gloat and say that they owned everyone in the stadium. This set up The Rock appearance and he made his way down to the ring to disagree. He and Triple H had a showdown and squared off recapping their battles over the years. Stephanie McMahon got in The Rock face and said that The Rock was nothing without the McMahons. Stephanie slapped The Rock and he left the ring, whilst outside he saw Ronda Rousey who was shown earlier, in the front row attending the event.
The Rock asked Rousey to step in the ring with him. Both Rousey and The Rock took it to The Authority. Both celebrated afterwords and speculation began at the time. My feeling at the time was that this was to set up a mixed tag team match for a year later, but we would actually have that match 3 years later but with Kurt Angle instead of Rock. Also later that year The Rock and Rousey would stare together in the same movie Fast 7. So this also felt like a publicity stunt for that further down the line.
But if Triple H is telling the truth, it was to set up a match between himself and The Rock a year later which sadly never materialised due to the Rock schedule.Still in hindsight, Sting should have gone over, Sting should have always gone over but I can see the logic behind Triple H going over. It’s just a shame we never got to see Triple H and The Rock square off one last time. But maybe we will get that match one day in Saudi Arabia perhaps.
